SEPTEMBER 15, 2013

I’d like to take this opportunity to personally say thank you and farewell to Mr. Dan Sleeper, who served Pittsylvania County as County Administrator for 25 years.  I wish him and his family well and I’m sure he will enjoy many years of getting extra sleep and riding his motorcycle.

We welcome Mr. Otis Hawker as the Interim County Administrator.  Mr. Hawker has previously served in this position.  We are in very capable hands and the transition has been smooth.  The Personnel Committee has begun its work to search for a new County Administrator.

The Legislative Committee has been reviewing and updating policies in the county’s Policies and Procedures Manual.  The Credit Card Policy has been updated, and we are now working on the Travel, Training & Education Policy, and a Cell Phone Policy.

The Board approved a Proclamation for the entire month of October to be designated as our “County-Wide Clean-up” month.  Individuals and groups are encouraged to hold clean-ups throughout the community any time during October and report the clean-up to your representative on the Beautification Committee.  Contact me if you don’t know who your representative is. We also have declared Saturday, October 19, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. as “Take Your Trash to the Landfill on us!”  Our landfill does not have Saturday hours; however, in conjunction with the county-wide clean-up, Pittsylvania County citizens can take their items (with the exception of hazardous material) to our landfill on Dry Fork Road and tipping fees are waived for Pittsylvania County citizens that day.

In conjunction with the clean-up and special landfill hours, the Beautification Committee also is sponsoring its first Poster Contest for elementary school students K-5 (public, private and home-schooled).  The theme is “Keeping our Community Clean” and students are asked to create a 14”X 22” poster of original work (no photos) and any type of art medium is acceptable (pencil, pen, chalk, markers, water colors, etc.).  1st place winners will be on display at the Callands Festival on October 5.  In addition to having their art work displayed in the lobby of the County Administration Building during October, the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place winners will be recognized at the Board of Supervisors meeting on October 7 at 7:00 p.m.  The deadline to have all entries in to your homeroom teacher, or to the County Administration office on Center Street in Chatham, is Monday, September 23, 2013.  The Beautification Committee representatives will pick up the entries from each elementary school.

In the near future, and for your convenience, I plan to be present in the County Administration Office Building on Center Street in Chatham periodically for the purpose of meeting with constituents.  Stay tuned for an announcement as to the days and times.  Once the schedule has been set, it would be best to call me and make an appointment; however, walk-ins will be fine.

If you would like to serve on a citizen board/commission, visit the county’s website, click on Documents and you will find the Citizen Committee Interest Form.  I thank you for the privilege of serving you.  You may contact me at 434-724-4343 or through my website at
